I’m always searching for easy ways to integrate simple, practical spiritual tools in to my everyday life. And I love that you are along for the ride. Here are two experiments you can try this week and see what affects it has in your life. After you try them, please post your results here. Let me know what’s happening in your life as a result of these two simple shifts.

The Gratitude Experiment

Thanks to my friends over at Elevated Existence Magazine, I found this gratitude experiment. The idea is simple: For one week, 24 hours a day, try to be consciously grateful for everything that happens in your life, no matter how bad it may seem. We know that gratitude is one of the highest forms of spiritual expression and one of the greatest tools to improve your life. Often, we may only take brief moments out of our day to be grateful. This experiment takes it to an advanced level. Having gratitude on the forefront of our minds can be even more powerful.

It’s easy to be grateful for the “good things”, whatever seems to be fitting with what you think is supposed to happen. For this experiment to work, try to be grateful for “everything”, whatever happens, even the small things that you may not have noticed before.

The Interesting Experiment

This experiment focuses on dealing with those pesky negative thoughts that can drive you mad, or set you spinning in circles. So, instead of fighting negativity this week, let’s make negativity “interesting”.

There’s a Chinese “blessing” (or curse, depending on how you look at it) that says “May you have an interesting life.” So, let’s do that with our negativity. Every time a negative thought crosses your mind, instead of dwelling on the thought, think “that’s interesting.” Observe the thought as interesting, with no power. Think of it as a curiosity, like “That’s interesting that I thought the other driver was rude when he cut me off on the freeway.” And then move on to whatever the next thought is in your stream of consciousness.

Try this for the same week as your gratitude experiment. It’s a nice compliment to being grateful for everything is to diffuse negativity with interestingness.

Post Your Results Here

An experiment is only as good as the written results. So, let’s get to experimenting and then let’s get to sharing our results with each other.
